Newham Council has become first London Council local authority to introduce Licensing for all private rented homes across the whole borough.
The scheme is designed to raise standards in private rented homes and reduce anti-social behaviour. What progress have they made?
Since January Newham has received 30,000 applications for a Licence. They have made 750 enforcement visits to homes which should be licensed; they have issued 1,200 warning letters and handed out 50 cautions. Thirty landlords are being prosecuted for renting properties without a licence.
Newham Council is determined to see renters homes being properly managed and is using their Licensing Scheme to achieve this.
“We’ll be making a trip to Newham over the Summer to see for ourselves the progress being made and to talk to Brent about doing the same,” said Sabina, a member of A4R’s Renters Campaign.
